Soviel vorweg – Gisborne hat natürlich Internet. Es mag am Ende der Welt sein (es rühmt sich ja damit jeden Tag die erste Stadt der Welt zu sein, die die Sonne begrüßt), aber es liegt nicht hinterm Mond. Allerdings reicht die Netzabdeckung meines Handy-Anbieters nur bis knapp hinter Aucklands Vorort Bombay, und die Gisborne Herald-Redaktion konnte uns nur einen alten, langsamen Computer mit 3G-Internet-Stick zur Verfügung stellen. Und den Computer mussten wir nunmal zu sechst teilen.

Zwar hatte unser Motel W-Lan, aber das Signal hat leider nicht bis zu unserem Apartment gereicht. Auf dem Weg zur Arbeit habe ich morgens immer meine eMails mit dem Telefon abgerufen, aber mit dem Computer wollte ich mich dann doch nicht mitten in die Einfahrt setzen.

Trotzdem muss ich zugeben, dass ich die Zeit ohne Internet fast genießen konnte. Schließlich nehme ich mir ja regelmäßig die Freiheit für die Zeit in der ich Uni-Aufsätze schreibe, einfach nicht online zu sein. Und jetzt als Journalist ohne Internet zu sein – ohne eMails, Suchmaschinen oder online Stadtrats-Protokolle – hatte einen gewissen Charme.

Die meiste Zeit klappte das auch ganz gut: Echte Landkarten, Telefonbücher und Laufarbeit. Und für mich auch kein online Wörterbuch. Es macht Spaß, Internetgewohnheiten zu überwinden. Aber nur wenn alle mitmachen. Aber das war nicht der Fall.

Die Stadtverwaltung von Gisborne, zum Beispiel, wollte nur per Mail auf Fragen antworten. Interviewpartner von Firmen und Organisationen mussten Fragen erst von Vorgesetzten genehmigen lassen. Und viele wollten einfach zusätzliche Informationen per eMail schicken. Ich hatte gar keine Chance offline zu bleiben.

Ich sehe mich selbst gerne als Online-Journalist. Aber an dieser Teamübung habe ich festgestellt, dass man sich gar nicht so weit aus dem Fenster lehnen muss, um an einer Offline-Redaktion zu scheitern.

Ach ja, die Exkursion selbst! Genial. Gisborne ist in etwa so groß wie meine Heimatstadt Viernheim, aber keineswegs vergleichbar. Land-, Forst- und Hafenwirtschaft brachten mir Artikel über Hunde mit Parvovirus, eine Bildergeschichte über ein neues Frachtschiff und Datenschutzfragen bei der Bekämpfung von Alkohol- und Drogenproblemen von Waldarbeitern. Wir hatten 4 Artikel auf der Titelseite, zwei Feuilletons, ein Rezept und haufenweise kleinere Artikel.

Zusammengefasst: eine großartige Erfahrung!

Ich habe Gerüchte gehört, der Gisborne Herald sucht demnächst seinen ersten Online-Redakteur. Ob der Job wohl was für mich wäre? Ich glaube nicht, dass ich für die Stadt am Ende der Welt mein Studium abbrechen würde. Aber ich würde es nicht generell ablehnen, ein wenig mehr Zeit in Gisborne zu verbringen.

Don’t get me wrong – Gisborne has internet. It might be a the city at the end of the world (they are proud of being the city to greet the sun first every day), but that doesn’t make it any less modern. Nonetheless, my provider’s cell phone coverage ended just past Auckland’s suburb of Bombay, and the Gisborne Herald only provided us with one old laptop with a really slow 3G internet stick that we had to share.

However, our motel did have broadband wifi. But the signal wasn’t strong enough to supply our apartment. And even though I did go outside every morning to check emails with my phone, I couldn’t be bothered to blog from the middle of the driveway.

But I have to admit that most of the times, I quite enjoyed not having internet. I mean for every bigger essay that I had to write for uni, I usually went offline for one or two weeks to simply focus on the work. And working offline as a journalist – without email, search engines, online council minutes – had a certain appeal.

And a lot of the times, the work went quite well. Using a real map, looking up people and organisations in the phone book and using the phone rather than email. And obviously for me, no online dictionary. It’s fun to overcome internet habits every once in a while. At least to the point where sources dictate you the use of the internet.

For example, one spokesperson for the Gisborne Council would only answer questions by email. Other organisation representatives needed questions emailed to have them approved by superiors, before being interviewed. And then there is all the information that people offer to send by email. So even though I wanted to stay offline, there was simply no way.

However, I call myself an online journalist. But by watching the whole team I realised you don’t have to be an online journalist, to be put off by an offline newsroom.

So what about my field trip experience? It was awesome. Being in a city so similar in size to my hometown in Germany, yet so different. I learned about puppies’ being vaccinated against parvovirus, the most important facts of a logging ship, privacy issues in forestry alcohol and drug abuse and catholic schools in New Zealand. We got three front page stories, two features, one recipe and lots of smaller stories printed.

We definitely had a pretty good time!

I heard rumors the Gisborne Herald might be hiring an online editor. I don’t think the job would be interesting enough to abort my Master’s studies. But spending some more time in Gisborne doesn’t sound too bad an idea after all.

The drive takes us about 450 km southeast of Auckland through Paeroa, Waihi, Tauranga and just around Whakatane. After that, Highway 2 leads about 150km through mostly uninhabited nature with a gorge that is about 70 km long. After leaving Auckland around lunchtime and a quick stop in Tauranga, we pass the gorge at night time.

With down to -3°C last night, we had a fresh start into the day, but the frozen car windows had melted by the sun’s warmth when we left.

The Gisborne Herald is an afternoon paper, and we had the first story in print before lunch.

The first day was mostly about getting stories started and a lot of phone calls had to be made. Nonetheless, I also went out with a photographer to take the picture of a dog being vaccinated. With a little luck, that story will be in the paper tomorrow.

PS: We are at a lovely motel in Gisborne, but the internet connection is really bad so that I cannot post any pictures or a German translation for now. But both will follow as soon as possible!

Dieses Semester sind die Ziele des Kurses eher auf Spezialisierung, Features und Feuilleton ausgelegt. Außerdem haben wir einen Kurs über Berichterstattung von öffentlichen Angelegenheiten, Regierung und Verwaltung. Darüberhinaus haben wir zwei Wahlkurse. Die erste Entscheidung fiel gegen Magazin- und Investigativjournalismus – ich denke das beides kann ich notfalls auch noch in Deutschland lernen. Da ich schon mal hier bin, habe ich trotz Warnungen Asien- und Pazifik-Journalismus gewählt.

Denn angeblich ist das so ziemlich der arbeitsaufwändigste Kurs, den man an meiner Uni wohl wählen kann. Aber ich glaube hier kann ich wirklich etwas einzigartiges lernen. Pazifische Regionen, politische Geschichte und Zusammenhänge, Wirtschaft und Geografie. Zum Beispiel wusste ich nicht, dass es in Mikronesien, Melanesien und Polynesien zusammen mehr als 20.000 Inseln gibt. Meinen ersten 1200-Wörter-Artikel muss ich in zwei Wochen abgeben. Außerdem werde ich in den Frühlingsferien wahrscheinlich als Videoreporter für das Pacific Media Centre beim Pacific Islands Forum sein. Dort haben 15 der 16 pazifischen Regierungschefs einen Gipfel, nur Fiji ist aufgrund der politischen Lage derzeit ausgeschlossen.

Mein zweites Wahlfach war mehr eine Medienwahl, und da ich ja ohnehin schon für Design, Konzept und Programmierung verantwortlich war, habe ich Online Video, Radio und Zeitung vorgezogen. Ich bin sogar Chef-Redakteur. Die neue Seite geht übrigens vermutlich am 18. August online, also unmittelbar bevor die erste Ausgabe der Zeitung dieses Semester erscheint. Vielleicht erlauben wir sogar einen kleinen Einblick in die Druckausgabe.

Und dann ist da natürlich noch unsere Exkursion. Morgen früh geht’s los nach Gisborne an der Ostküste. Gisborne behauptet die Stadt zu sein, die jeden Tag als erstes auf der Welt die Sonne begrüßen darf. Auch wenn das nur auf manche Jahreszeiten zutrifft, ist es sicherlich einer der östlichsten Punkte der Welt. Ich arbeite dort mit 5 Kommilitonen für den Gisborne Herald, die Lokalzeitung. Und da ich meine Kamera dabei habe werde ich auch versuchen ein paar Video-Berichte zu verfassen.

Um immer auf dem Laufenden zu bleiben, wo auf meinem Weg nach Gisborne ich gerade bin, gibt’s hier einen Liveticker mit Streckenprofil und Landkarte. Am Sonntag um die Mittagszeit (Neuseeland-Zeit) geht’s los!

This semester our journalistic work is more focused on feature writing and specialisation. Besides our main writing course, we have a public affairs reporting workshop and two electives. As my first choice, I could have chosen magazine or investigative journalism. But I guess I can also learn something about that in Germany. Since I am already at this end of the world, I chose asian-pacific journalism.

Even though lecturers and staff have warned me that this is probably the course with the greatest workload, I think it is the most for me to make out of this year. I will learn about all the conflicts in the pacific region, learn politics, economics and geography. Did you know there are more than 20,000 islands in all of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia? My first 1200 word feature is due in two weeks time. In the mid-semester break I will probably attend the Pacific Islands Forum as a journalist for the Pacific Media Centre, where 15 of the 16 of leaders of Pacific Islands will have a summit (Fiji is currently expelled).

The second elective was a choice of media. Since I already designed our new Te Waha Nui homepage, I chose the online stream rather than newspaper, radio or video. By the way, we will probably launch the new site just before the release of the first newspaper. So watch this space on August 18. You might even be able to have a sneak preview of some of the newspaper content.

The next semester highlight is our Field trip to Gisborne. I will be leaving tomorrow for this trip to the East coast. Gisborne claims to be the first city in the world to greet the sun every day. It is certainly one of the easternmost places in the world. I will be working with a couple of other students at the local newspaper, the Gisborne Herald. I will also take my camera and might try to take the chance to do some more video work.

Bevor meine beiden Wochen bei Radio New Zealand in Wellington losgehen konnten, musste ich meine Erwartungen aufschreiben. Bei der abschließenden Bewertung habe ich dann festgestellt, dass alle Punkte erfüllt waren:

• Stimmtraining
• Parlamentsbesuch
• unterschiedliche Nachrichtenaspekte aus einem Bericht herausarbeiten, Einleitungen schreiben
• Produktion des Morning Reports begleiten
• Gerichtsbesuch
• Besuch in der Online-Abteilung
• Meine eigenen Stücke im Programm

Trotz dieses erfüllten Wunschzettels bin ich überrascht, wie wenig ich zu tun hatte. Im Schnitt war ich wohl etwa ein Drittel des Tages unbeschäftigt.

OK. Die beiden Wochen waren auch ansich eher dürftig mit Nachrichten gespickt – selbst angestellte Reporter hatten sehr ruhige Tage. Aber wirklich überrascht hat mich ein Kommentar, dass ich mich glücklich schätzen sollte, wie viel ich tun durfte weil so viele Reporter krank seien. Da wundere ich mich dann doch, ob nicht vielleicht ein paar zu viele Menschen hier arbeiten.

Aber natürlich bin ich nicht in der Position aus zwei ruhigen Wochen solch dramatische Schlüsse zu ziehen.

Wirklich Eindrücke hinterlassen hat aber auch mein Besuch in der Internet-Abteilung. Ich hatte dabei einfach ein paar Fragen zu RNZs Onlinestrategie, sozialen Medien oder einfach die Abdeckung der Onlineberichterstattung durch die Reporter. Kurzfassung: es gibt sie nicht.

Reporter nehmen keine Kameras mit, wenn sie unterwegs sind. Homepagedesign und Suchmaschinenoptimierung laufen nach Gefühl und eine Zielgruppe gibt es nicht. Twitter ist das einzige soziale Medium von RNZ. Und es war erst meine Frage nach dem Warum, dass überhaupt jemand festgestellt hat, dass @rnz_news nicht mehr zwitschert.

Zugegeben, was hier ein Team von 7 Technikern und Redakteuren durch raten stemmt ist beeindruckend und erfüllt seinen Zweck. Selbst Twitter lief nach zwei Stunden wieder.

Trotzdem würde ich mir von einer regierungsregulierten Medienanstalt mehr erwarten, wenn sie die gesamte Bevölkerung erreichen soll. Vielleicht wäre es an der Zeit in neue Medien zu investieren. Aber weil ich weiß, dass Finanzierung hier nochmal ein ganz anderes Thema ist als in Deutschland, will ich demnächst mal die beiden Konzepte des öffentlichen Rundfunks in Deutschland und Neuseeland hier im Blog vergleichen.

Mein Praktikum bei SWR3.online war vor ziemlich genau zwei Jahren. Der aktuelle Rundfunkstaatsvetrag (nach dem 12. Rundfunkänderungsstaatsvertrag), lässt es leider nicht zu, die von mir produzierten Inhalte heute noch abzurufen. Aber in den drei Monaten habe ich mich im Großen und Ganzen mit Online- und Technikjournalismus befasst, Videos gedreht, soziale Medien eingesetzt und die Sendeinhalte ins Netz gebracht. Aber meine eigenen Inhalte durfte ich nicht auf Sendung präsentieren.

Wenn ich diese beiden Erfahrungen vergleiche, komme ich aber trotzdem zu dem Schluss dass beide unglaublich lehrreich waren. Radio New Zealand hat mir viel über professionell gesprochenes, umgangssprachliches Englisch im Radio gelehrt. Aussprache, Intonation, Geschwindigkeit. Ich weiß mehr über Nachrichtenstile und wie Inhalte stündlich interessant und für jede Nachrichtenstunde aufbereitet werden.

Aber langfristig würde ich mir für meinen Job wünschen, dass die Nachrichten auch für online aufbereitet werden. Denn Radio kämpft immer mit der Aufmerksamkeitsspanne der Zuhörer während das Internet die Chance bietet Inhalte weiter zu beleben und interessierte Hörer zu binden. Nutzer diskutieren Inhalte und Präsentation und als Journalist kann ich Hintergründe verlinken und nachhaltig anbieten.

For my two week work experience at Radio New Zealand in Wellington, I was required to write down my expectations beforehand. When doing an evaluation afterwards, it became obvious to me, that basically all these wishes had come true:

• voice training
• visiting Parliament
• covering different angles on the same stories & improving my intro writing
• watching the morning report being produced
• visiting the courts
• getting an insight into the web department
• having own pieces on air

However, I am surprised how little I was able, wanted or required to do. I would guess that on average, about a third of the day I was doing nothing that was related to the actual internship.

Obviously, we had two rather quiet weeks. Even staff reporters seemed idle every once in a while. But I was really surprised when I was told how lucky we could feel for how much they had us do because so many people were sick. Apparently, students on work experience get even less to do. This makes me wonder whether RNZ News might be a little overstaffed.

But I am not the person to make assumptions as I cannot compare the situation to more newsheavy weeks.

Another eyeopener was my visit to the online department. I was mostly interested in RNZ’s online strategy, the use of social media or simply the reporter’s web awareness. The short version of the answers that I got is they have none.

Reporters don’t take cameras when they go out to cover stories. The design of the homepage, and search engine optimisation are based on best practice, a target group is not even defined. The use of social media is limited to Twitter. And it was only when I asked why it had had been taken offline about 6 weeks ago, that they noticed that the Twitter stream @rnz_news was down.

This is just an observation. For purely best practice work by a team of seven people, the site is incredible. And it fulfills its purpose very well. And the Twitter feed was back up and running within two hours. This is incredible.

Nonetheless, I would expect more from a governmentally funded broadcaster who wants to reach the whole population. Maybe now would be the time to invest into new media. But I decided to have a look into the different concepts of public broadcasting in New Zealand and Germany in a blog soon.

My internship at German broadcaster SWR3.online was almost exactly two years ago. Unfortunately due to the latest version of Interstate Treaty on Broadcasting (based on the 12th Amendment to the Interstate Broadcasting Treaties) the content that I produced in the three months working there are not available online anymore. But my time was filled with online and technology journalism, video production, social media broadcasting and online enrichment of on air content. Even though I never presented my own stories on air.

Comparing these two experiences, I come to the conclusion that both were similarly valuable. Radio New Zealand taught me a lot about the professional use of spoken, possibly colloquial English in radio production. Pronunciation, intonation, speed. I know more about the style of news and how to keep content updated for each news bulletin of the day.

But in the long run, I would wish to find a job that enhances stories online. Radio is very much bound by the listener’s attention span and the web offers the opportunity to bring news more to live for whoever is interested. People interact and discuss on the news and how they are presented. You can present background information that can outline processes that date years back.

Ein paar Daten vorab: Wellington ist die Hauptstadt von Neuseeland, auch wenn es nur etwa ein drittel der Einwohnerzahl von Auckland hat. Wellington liegt am Südende der Nordinsel mit einer Fähre auf die andere Seite der Cookstraße nach Picton auf der Südinsel. Laut der englischen Wikipedia ist Wellington die zweitjüngste Stadt Neuseelands.

Nach meiner Ankunft am Samstagmittag waren an den Wochenenden größtenteils Sehenswürdigkeiten angesagt. Am beeindruckendsten fand ich meinen Sonntagmorgenspaziergang, während dem ich festgestellt habe, wie aktiv die Stadt ist. Unzählige Familien waren im Hafen unterwegs und die Kinder haben sich meist auf einem der vielen Spielplätze vergnügt. Fahrradfahrer, Skateboarder, Inlineskater, Jogger – allesamt an der frischen Luft oder auf dem Gemüsemarkt unterwegs. In Auckland habe ich das so noch nicht erlebt. Das mag aber auch vielleicht daran liegen, dass sich das leben dort mehr auf die Vororte verlegt. Da ich in der Innenstadt wohne, kann ich das so nicht sagen.

Am darauf folgenden Samstagmorgen bin ich auf den Mount Victoria gewandert und habe den Ausblick über Stadt und Meer genossen. Nord- und Südinsel sind an der engsten Stelle nur 24km auseinander. Wenn ich richtig gerechnet habe, sollte man also auf die andere Seite schauen können. Ich habe die Südinsel nicht gesehen. Vielleicht liegt Wellington aber auch nicht exakt an der engsten Stelle oder ich habe in die falsche Richtung geschaut. Auf jeden Fall war es ziemlich windig. Aber dafür ist “windy Wellington” ja bekannt.

Ansonsten habe ich versucht so viel wie möglich aus meinen zwei Wochen zu machen. Durch die Stadt bummeln, Parlament und Te Papa, das Nationalmuseum besuchen und das Cablecar in die botanischen Gärten nehmen. Außerdem war ich mit Victoria – die gleichzeitig mit mir im Praktikum bei Radio Neuseeland war – jeden morgen in einem anderen Café Kaffee besorgen. Wenn also jemand Tipps für Kaffee in Wellington braucht, ich weiß bescheid.

Mein Flug zurück nach Auckland geht heute Abend und am Montag geht die Uni wieder los. Irgendwie machen mich mein Stundenplan und die Ankündigungen der Professoren etwas nervös über den Aufwand der mir nächstes Semester bevorsteht. Trotzdem freue ich mich auf asiatisch-pazifischen Journalismus, mehr Stenografie, meine Aufgaben als Online-Chefredakteur unsere Exkursionen und noch mehr Neuseeland.

Achja. Und über mein Praktikum bei Radio Neuseeland schreibe ich in ein paar Tagen separat.

A little general information about Wellington: Even though it is only about a third of the population of Auckland, it is New Zealand’s capital. It is located at the very South end of the North Island with a ferry service across the Cook Strait to Picton on in the South Island. According to Wikipedia, Wellington is the second youngest city in New Zealand.

Arriving on a Saturday afternoon, I spent most of the first weekend doing sightseeing. I was most impressed when I strolled along the Waterfront on Sunday morning to see how active this city is. There were lots of parents out with their children playing on one of the many playgrounds. Cyclists, skaters, inline skaters, joggers – all breathing the fresh air and moving and taking advantage of the veggie market. In Auckland’s CBD, I haven’t seen of of this happening. It might happen in the suburbs, but I don’t live there.

On the following Saturday morning, I walked up to the top of Mount Victoria and enjoyed the view over the city. The North and South Islands are only 24km apart at their closest point, so I believe it should be possible to see the South Island. I didn’t see it, but it might have also been that I looked in the wrong direction. I did though feel the wind that Wellington is known for, that blows through the cook strait. Windy as!

Besides that, I obviously strolled through the city, went to Parliament and Te Papa (the National Museum), took a tour on the cable car and had Victoria – who was doing the internship at Radio New Zealand with me – take me to a different coffee place every morning. So if you want to know where to get the best coffee in Wellington, just ask me.

My flight back to Auckland leaves tonight and uni resumes on Monday. My schedule and all announcements by my professors let me assume the next semester will be even busier than the last one. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to it. I will blog about my experiences at Radio New Zealand in a few days.

• Ich hatte mein erstes Konzert mit dem Auckland Youth Choir. Hier gibt’s die Videos. Unser nächstes Projekt im kommenden Semester ist Mozarts Requiem. Nach unserer ersten Probe habe ich festgestellt, dass da erschreckend viel auf uns zukommt, aber ich freue mich auf die Herausforderung.
• Das erste Uni-Semester ist rum. Die letzten Semesterwochen waren anstrengend aber das war’s wert. Hier sind alle meine Artikel für Te Waha Nui.
• Als Teil unseres Kurses ‘Journalism Law & Ethics’ waren wir in Auckland’s District und High Courts. Jetzt weiß ich glaube ich mehr über Neuseelands Justiz als über Deutschlands. Aber ich habe vor das zu ändern sobald ich wieder daheim bin.
• In den Ferien habe ich verschiedene Jobs gehabt, unter anderem habe ich am Relaunch und Redesign von Te Waha Nui gearbeitet. Natürlich kann ich hier vorab noch nichts verraten, aber der Start ist in den nächsten zwei Wochen geplant und dann gibt’s hier natürlich auch alle Infos.
• An einem Ferien-Samstag war ich mit Chris Chang unterwegs um ein Video zu drehen. Wir sind dann spontan bei Aucklands SlutWalk gelandet und haben ein bisschen Guerrilla-Journalismus versucht. Der Artikel ist von Sarah Robson; Artikel und Video gibt’s hier.

Derzeit mache ich mein Praktikum bei Radio New Zealand in Wellington. Es ist interessant meine Erfahrungen von hier mit denen von vor 2 Jahren bei SWR3 zu vergleichen. Aber mehr darüber und ueber Wellington an sich am Wochenende. Versprochen!
